Overview
Removing a stairlift sounds simple, but doing it cleanly — without scratching the wall, gouging the treads or leaving sharp brackets behind — takes the same trained engineer who fits one. Every removal we carry out across Plymouth, Devon and East Cornwall is completed by our own employed staff, never a generic clearance contractor. We bring dust sheets, the right tools and the right lifting equipment, isolate the lift safely, dismantle it section by section and carry it out to the van in pieces small enough to handle without damaging your home.
Most straight stairlift removals take 1–2 hours from arrival to clean-up. Curved and outdoor lifts take a little longer because the rail is bespoke and has to come out in measured sections. The rail is bolted to the treads of the staircase — never the wall or skirting — so all that remains afterwards is a row of small filled bolt holes, easily hidden by carpet, a runner or a quick touch of stain on bare wood. We hoover, wipe down, take everything away in one trip and leave your staircase ready to use.
What happens next depends on the lift. Modern working stairlifts from recognised brands are stripped, tested and refurbished in our Plymouth workshop, then re-homed through our stock — which is why we can often offer a buy-back price rather than a removal charge. Lifts that are beyond economic repair are broken down for parts and the rest is recycled through licensed waste partners. Almost nothing goes to landfill. If you're replacing the lift with a newer model or moving to a rental, the removal slots into the same visit so you're never left without stair access.
