Emergency stairlift repairs in Plymouth

Emergency Stairlift Repairs in Plymouth

A stairlift breaking down is more than an inconvenience — for anyone who relies on it to get to the bathroom or to bed, it's a genuine emergency. That's why we hold the most common Bruno spares in the van and prioritise call-outs where the lift is the only way between floors.

Quick answer

If your stairlift has stopped working and someone is stranded upstairs or downstairs, call Stairlifts Plymouth on 01752 648599. We prioritise emergency call-outs across Plymouth, Devon and East Cornwall — usually a same-day visit where the lift is the only way up or down. We currently service Bruno stairlifts in-house and are actively expanding to cover other major brands soon; for other makes we can often still diagnose and get you moving safely.

Stairlifts Plymouth — who we are

Meet the team behind Stairlifts Plymouth and learn how we help families across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.

Nine times out of ten a stairlift 'not working' is one of a small handful of things: a flat battery, a tripped safety edge, a key switch left off, or the seat not correctly stowed. We can talk you through the quick checks over the phone — often we'll have you moving again before we've even set off.

If it's a genuine mechanical or electronic fault, our engineers carry the most common Bruno components (batteries, chargers, safety edges, control boards, remote controls) so most breakdowns are fixed on the first visit. No return trips, no waiting for parts, no upstairs bedroom becoming a hotel room.

Try these three checks before you call

First: check the key switch on the arm of the seat. It's very easy for a grandchild (or a well-meaning cleaner) to turn it off. Turn it to 'on' and try again.

Second: make sure the seat, footrest and armrests are all in the fully-lowered running position, and that nothing is trapped under the footrest safety edge. A tiny piece of stair carpet is enough to stop the lift.

Third: check the charging points at the top and bottom of the rail. The lift only charges when it's parked at one of these points — if it's been left mid-stairs overnight the batteries may simply be flat. Park it at the top or bottom and leave it for 30–60 minutes.

If none of those solve it, call us on 01752 648599 and we'll get an engineer on the way.

What our emergency call-out includes

A fixed call-out fee covers the engineer's travel, up to an hour on site, and a full diagnostic of the fault. If parts are needed, we quote the parts before we fit them — no surprises on the invoice.

For lifts still in warranty (or on a service plan with us) the call-out and any covered parts are included at no extra cost. Ask when you call and we'll confirm your cover.

If the lift genuinely can't be repaired economically, we'll say so honestly — and we can quote for a replacement or a removal on the same visit. We won't sell you a repair that won't last.

When to book a service instead of an emergency call-out

The single best way to avoid a stairlift emergency is an annual safety service. Batteries lose capacity, seat belts fray, safety sensors get grubby, and a 30-minute annual service catches all of it long before it strands anyone.

If your lift is over 12 months since its last service and it's just starting to feel slow, click oddly, or stop occasionally, book a service rather than an emergency call-out — it's cheaper and usually solves the problem for the next year.

Common questions

Do you do out-of-hours emergency repairs?
During normal working hours (Mon–Fri 08:30–17:00, Sat 09:00–15:00) we prioritise emergencies. Outside those hours please leave a voicemail on 01752 648599 and we'll respond first thing.
How much is an emergency call-out?
There is a fixed call-out fee, plus any parts needed. We'll always tell you the parts price before we fit anything — no surprises on the invoice.
Do you repair stairlifts we didn't install?
Yes. We currently service Bruno stairlifts in-house and can usually diagnose and safely get most other makes moving. We're actively expanding to cover other major brands soon.
My lift is beeping. Is that an emergency?
Usually not — a repeated beep almost always means low battery. Park the lift at the top or bottom charge point for an hour first. If the beep continues, call us.
Can you talk me through it on the phone?
Yes, and we often will. Many 'broken' stairlifts are a key switch or a flat battery — we'll try the free fix first before we send an engineer.
How quickly can you get to me?
For genuine emergencies in the Plymouth area we aim for same-day. Standard breakdowns are typically within 24 hours.
