Saltash is the gateway town from Devon into South East Cornwall, perched above the Tamar between Brunel's Royal Albert Railway Bridge and the 1961 Tamar Road Bridge. The town has grown well beyond its old fishing-port roots and now covers everything from Victorian terraces on Fore Street down to the very modern estates at Pillmere and Latchbrook.

That mix matters when it comes to stairlifts. The older waterside properties on Albert Road, Tamar Street and the steep lanes leading down to Saltash Passage often have narrow, twisting staircases — typically a curved rail, a slim profile carriage and sometimes a powered swivel seat. The newer homes around Pillmere, Latchbrook and Carkeel are mostly conventional two-storey houses where a straight rail can be fitted in a single morning.

Saltash has a notably older population than the South West average.
