Read about stairliftsAbout Saltash — and what it means for your stairlift
Saltash is the gateway town from Devon into South East Cornwall, perched above the Tamar between Brunel's Royal Albert Railway Bridge and the 1961 Tamar Road Bridge. The town has grown well beyond its old fishing-port roots and now covers everything from Victorian terraces on Fore Street down to the very modern estates at Pillmere and Latchbrook.
That mix matters when it comes to stairlifts. The older waterside properties on Albert Road, Tamar Street and the steep lanes leading down to Saltash Passage often have narrow, twisting staircases — typically a curved rail, a slim profile carriage and sometimes a powered swivel seat. The newer homes around Pillmere, Latchbrook and Carkeel are mostly conventional two-storey houses where a straight rail can be fitted in a single morning.
Saltash has a notably older population than the South West average. The combination of a hospital across the river at Derriford, a busy GP surgery in town and a settled community of retired residents means a quiet but steady demand for home adaptations — and a strong preference for staying in the family home rather than moving.
We've been supplying stairlifts on both sides of the Tamar for over 40 years. We know which streets sit on the steep gradient above the water, which estates have the deeper hall geometry that suits a longer footrest, and which villages benefit from a powered-hinge rail at the bottom to avoid blocking a narrow corridor.
Saltash neighbourhoods we cover
We work in every street and outlying village inside PL12. The notes below reflect what our engineers actually see in each part of town — not a generic description.
Saltash Waterside & Old Town
Victorian and Edwardian terraces stepping down to the Tamar — split levels and steep stairs are typical.
St Stephens
Older village core with cottages and pre-war semis; tight first-floor landings often need a powered swivel seat.
Burraton & Burraton Coombe
1960s–70s semis and bungalows; almost always straight-rail installations, very quick to fit.
Latchbrook
Modern 1990s estates with conventional stair geometry — ideal for slim straight rails.
Pillmere
Newer detached housing built since 2000; straight lifts dominate, often with extended footrests for taller users.
Carkeel
Mixed older and new build above the A38 — easy access for our engineers from Plymouth.
Trematon, Hatt, Botus Fleming, Landrake, Tideford
Outlying PL12 villages with a mix of cottages and farmhouses — all included in our regular cover.
Why Saltash residents choose a stairlift
Recovering after Derriford surgery
A short-term rental lift bridges the recovery weeks after hip, knee or back surgery at Derriford, then we remove it cleanly when you no longer need it.
Staying in the family home
Most Saltash customers tell us the same thing — they have no intention of moving. A stairlift lets you stay in the home you built your life in.
Helping elderly parents
We're used to working with adult children calling from elsewhere in the UK to arrange a lift for a parent in PL12. We can liaise fully with both parties.
Managing the steep Saltash streets
Many older Saltash homes sit on plots that climb away from the Tamar. An outdoor stairlift to the front door is often the missing piece.
Coping with split-level homes
Two short rails — one for the entrance steps, one upstairs — are common in the older waterside properties. We co-ordinate both as one project.
Whichever situation describes you best, our advice is the same — book a free home survey, get an honest written quotation, then take your time deciding. There is never any pressure to move forward on the day. If you'd like a feel for prices first, our 2026 stairlift cost guide shows realistic figures for every type of lift, and our rent vs buy guide is the clearest way to decide between hire and purchase.
Recent local install
Two short rails for a split-level home in St Stephens
A genuine recent example from PL12. Every Saltash job is different — but the standards we apply, the engineers who attend and the warranty you receive are identical.
- Location
- St Stephens, Saltash (PL12)
- Property
- 1930s split-level semi-detached
- Product
- One short curved rail + one straight rail
- Time on site
- One working day
Challenge
Five steps from the front door up to the main hallway, then a full 13-step flight to the bedrooms. The customer — recovering from a hip replacement at Derriford — could not safely manage either flight unaided.
Solution
A short curved rail for the entrance level so the seat parks cleanly out of the way of the front door, plus a powered-swivel straight rail upstairs. Both lifts use the same handset style so the customer only ever has one set of controls to learn.
Outcome
Full ground-to-bedroom access restored on the day of fitting. The customer was discharged home from Derriford the same week and has been using both lifts independently ever since. Annual servicing is now booked in automatically every January.
